Chapter Seven
HARVEST
âWe should go back before we catch a chill,â Evan said and took Florenceâs hand, leading the way back toward the house. After taking a few steps, he let go of her hand and put his arm around her shoulders, pressing a kiss into her soaked hair. The rain didnât let up even a little, but they still walked at a leisurely pace; apparently Evan didnât want this experience to end any more than she did. Florence was glad for the way he stopped at the back door before going inside and turned to face her. She marveled at how dramatically everything had changed between them now that theyâd admitted honestly to their feelings. It was easy to return the gentle smile he offered just before he kissed her again. She wouldnât have believed anything could have been sweeter than their first kiss, but she quickly had to accept that this tender exchange of affection between them was the sweetest thing sheâd ever known.
âAnson will never let us live this down,â Evan said and chuckled. âHeâs absolutely intolerable when heâs right about something.â
Florence laughed. âHe is indeed. Perhaps we should just keep it to ourselves for now.â
Evan chuckled again; it seemed they were both simply overflowing with happiness. âDo you honestly think that if we go back in there with all of that tension no longer around us that any one of them wonât know weâve finally admitted to the truth theyâve all known for months?â
âYou make a fair point,â Florence said, glad they were now shielded from the rain by the awning that came out over the back door so they could talk without getting drenched any further. âBut . . .â She couldnât come up with the words to articulate how she felt.
âBut youâre afraid if things donât work out between us permanently, it will only cause more tension and difficulties,â he guessed with perfect accuracy. âSo, I have a proposition. I suggest that we tell them we are courting, which is absolutely not any kind of official announcement; itâs a period of time where two people can spend time together and decide if marriage is a possibility. No one beyond those who live in this house have to know until we give the matter more time and know for certain, but I believe we have to be honest with them; theyâre our family. And Iâm certain they will all be understanding if things donât work out, but . . .â He smirked and quickly kissed her again. âI do not believe that will ever be an issue.â
âAre you so confident that you can convince me to marry you?â Florence asked lightly, surprised by how confident she felt over the matter now that her true fearsâand hopesâhad been spoken aloud.
âYes, I am,â he said and kissed her once more. âSo, is that all right with you?â
âYes,â she said. âI think it sounds perfectly reasonable, but you have to be the one to tell them.â
âAnd I will,â he said.
